Toledo Psychiatrists Prescribe Suboxone

toledo psychiatry

Buprenorphine is a medication that has been incredibly useful for people who suffer from opioid addiction, whether it is from prescription painkillers or heroin, and who want to get their lives back in order. Addiction has a terrible potential for destruction, and buprenorphine is one tool that doctors have to try and help their patients from this depth. Suboxone and Subutex are just two of the possible formulations commonly used.

Both Dr. Kelly and Dr. Arar have taken the extra steps to become certified by the Drug Enforcement Agency to be able to safely prescribe Suboxone. Dr. Kelly has been certified since 2007. Dr. Arar works extensively with Suboxone and Subutex and employs all forms of addiction treatment through his work with Arrowhead Behavioral Health, an inpatient psychiatric hospital for dual-diagnosed patients with mental illnesses and addiction problems.

What to Expect

A patient must be in moderate withdrawal from opioids when they arrive for their first appointment. The doctor will talk to the patient about the patient’s addiction and come up with a treatment plan. The patient will need to go and get the prescription filled and bring it back to the office at the next specified date for induction. For Dr. Arar, that may be later that same day; for Dr. Kelly, it would most likely be the next day.

The patient must be in withdrawal when they are induced — otherwise, the dose of Suboxone will induce withdrawal very suddenly. The dose needed to maintain control of symptoms without precipitating withdrawal needs to be determined. That may take from several days to several weeks. The patient will need to be seen anywhere from daily to a few times a week during the first few months until stability is achieved.

You will be expected to attend treatment and therapy groups. You will be expected to come in for random toxicology testing and random pill counts. If you violate any of the rules of the policy, you may be dismissed as a patient from the office.

Please review our Suboxone Policy. If you believe you may be an appropriate candidate for Suboxone therapy, and you are willing to follow our treatment guidelines, then please call for more information or an appointment. When you call, please identify the doctor you would like to be scheduled. The policy will be a downloadable PDF coming soon.
